Sustainable Agriculture, Marketing and Economic Empowerment

Training

Green Home has conducted several trainings for its farmers and young farmers clubs in selected communities and primary schools on good practices of organic farming, agro forestry and environmental conservation. Green Home has promoted the establishment of young farmers clubs in schools and model homes among the beneficiary farmers to act as learning and demonstration sites.

Coffee value chain

This was supported by HIVOS. A total of 1000 Green Home members benefited from this project. Farmers were given hand pulpers for hand processing of coffee in order to increase coffee quality. The 1000 Farmers constituted themselves into a marketing association; and this has increased their bargaining power. The farmers have set up a store to bulk coffee and which they sell jointly in order to influence big buyers. A coffee hulling machine is yet to be installed, but we still have challenges of power, Electricity is still not yet enough. We are lobbying for extension of a stronger 3. phase transmitter from the electricity distributing company- Kilembe investments LTD.

Soap Processing

Currently 2 of our 20 groups are processing soap from local herbs. This project was supported by Sustainable Agriculture Trainers Network (SATNET).

Charcoal making

One of our groups has specialized in Charcoal making. This is done by recycling waste from charcoal and kitchen refuse as a way of reducing environmental pollution

Local savings and lending initiatives

Green home has been able to form village savings and lending associations and supported the savings group to form an umbrella SACCO. This initiative is benefiting over 1500 members.

Water, Health, Sanitation and Nutrition

Health and HIV/AIDS mainstreaming program:

Green Home with Support from Concern worldwide implemented a program aimed at mainstreaming HIV/AIDS both at work place in the communities where Green Home is working. Green Home has been able to form good community Samaritan volunteer teams to advice people living with HIV/AIDS on care and support opportunities. The project also helped Green Home to develop and operationalize an HIV/AIDS policy.

Water, Health, Sanitation and nutrition

Green home has been able to form and train volunteer trainers in community and in institutions of learning like primary and secondary schools in safe water use, health, sanitation and hygiene. We also linked the beneficiaries’ activities to the government, and formed village health teams in each of the villages in which our program is operating. In addition, Green Home has established model homes for sanitation and hygiene, well facilitated with sanitary facilities, like drying racks, latrine covers and tip taps. Green home has also conducted community outreach in hard-to-reach villages on good safe water use and management, good sanitary practices especially during outbreak of cholera, typhoid and dysentery. Green Home has linked up with Kagando Hospital to conduct massive sensitization on water borne diseases and HIV/AIDS in communities of Kisinga, Kyondo covering total of 600 households.

Pro Poor Enterprise Promotion

With Support from Trickle Up – New York, Green Home was able to support 500 members from very poor communities to start income generating enterprises.
